Handsfree Bluetooth speakerphones are my favorite way to make or receive calls while I am driving. For some reason I have never liked the in-ear designs because they don't seem to fit me correctly. BlueAnt has introduced the Supertooth 3 (ST3) handsfree speakerphone, which is one of the best designs I have used. The ST3 measures 4.80 x 2.40 x 0.80 inches (121.92 x 60.96 x 20.32 mm) and weighs 3.88 ounces (115 grams). The unit attaches itself magnetically to a metal visor clip (2 are included). The unit is designed to provide a safe way to use your mobile phone while driving. It can be paired with up to 8 devices and supports voice dial activation, redial and call reject (if your mobile phone supports these features). The BlueAnt ST3 comes with a car adapter, an AC adaptor, 2 sun visor clips, a quick start guide, a users manual, and a warranty card.
Installation
The user simply slides the enclosed metal clip (there are two for different vehicles) onto the car's sun visor and attaches the ST3 using the magnets on the back of the unit. You can feel the ST3 snap into place. Voice prompts (available in 6 different languages) can help you connect the unit to your phone. We paired the ST3 with a BlackBerry 8830 World Edition from Verizon. It had no problem working with this phone. Once connected, the ST3 will then upload your address book.
Operation and Performance
When the Green power button is pressed, the ST3 powers on and states 'BlueAnt ST3 Ready - Connected to Phone'. When the Green button is pressed and held for 5 seconds, the ST3 powers off with the unit announcing 'BlueAnt ST3 Powering Down'. The ST3's sophisticated Text-to-Speech software announces the name or number of the caller based on how it is stored in your cell phone. Accepting calls is as simple as saying 'OK' or 'Accept Call'. However, based on our testing you must say this loudly, otherwise it may go unnoticed. The best part is that there is no need to take your hands off the wheel or your eyes off the road.

The Supertooth 3 also features advanced Digital Signal Processing software that helps eliminate noise and produces good sound quality. This was the case even with some moderate background noise. The ST3 automatically adjusts the sound level based on ambient noise levels.
Vibration Sensing
Something unique about the design is the auto-vibration sensor reconnection. When the user gets out of the vehicle and does not turn off the unit, the ST3 will enter a standby state. When a vibration is detected (from a door closing), the ST3 will scan the area and reconnect to your phone if it is present. This is quite a clever idea that works well.There were some minor drawbacks to the Supertooth 3 that we noticed. The blue light that blinks once the unit is on can be a bit annoying at night while driving. After a while, I became used to it.
Our review unit came with a vehicle power charger along with a vent clip cradle. This keeps the headset in an easy to find location while being charged in the vehicle. The ST3 has an internal rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery. BlueAnt states up to 15 hours of talk time and up to 800 hours of standby time. Charge time can be up to 3 hours depending on the battery level. When connecting the ST3 to the power adapter (car or AC), the unit says 'Charging' giving a good indication that power has been applied.
Conclusion
The BlueAnt Supertooth 3 is an excellent handsfree design and has been in my Nissan Armada for several weeks now. The unit is easy to use and provides good sound quality while I am driving my truck. The Caller ID is a great feature that allows you to keep your eyes on the road while driving. When receiving calls, the 'text-to-speech' feature announces who is calling making it easy to determine the source of the call. I actually prefer the SP3 over some of the other units reviewed over the years. The SP3 retails for $129.95, but can be found for well under $100, making it a great deal.
